Today we drove to Merzouga, the real Sahara desert. Although not as extended as the dunes in Algeria, Lybia or even Tunisia, the dunes stretch 30 km long and 8 km wide. The road leading to our accommodation was mostly dirt track. We enjoyed the weather, the sights and the sheer feeling of space in the vast flat lands we have gone through.
We stayed in a small riyadh – the hosts were great and served excellent food. The rooms were small but cosy and warm – an important asset in a location where night temperatures drop below 0.
Before dinner though we headed for the roof terrace to contemplate the marvellous sunset behind the dunes.
